Property values increase in Lewisville, Flower Mound and other Denton County cities

Despite the struggling economy, property values in Lewisville, Flower Mound and other southern Denton County cities have increased, according to updated preliminary appraisal figures released by the Denton Central Appraisal District show.

Although the numbers are expected to drop when tax rolls are certified in July, Denton County property values are up 3.7 percent – a figure that reflects a slowdown in growth throughout the county.

Carrollton drops plans for immigration task force

Council members of a Dallas suburb have dismissed plans to create a citizens task force to target illegal immigration, in part because a neighboring city has been halted from enforcing immigration-related measures.

The Carrollton City Council could not agree on what the mission of the citizens task force would be, how many members it would have or how those members would be chosen. Instead, officials decided to let four council subcommittee members study illegal immigration.

Lewisville to debate English as the city's official language

The Lewisville City Council is expected to debate English as the city's official language, as well as which documents to translate into Spanish or other languages.

The council discussed translating documents in August but decided to postpone a decision until October. The council will reconsider the document matter today, as well as an official language resolution.

Carrollton Police Department holds self-defense classes for women

The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. Class will be held each Monday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Oct. 20 until Nov. 10 at the Carrollton Police Department Training Room (2025 E. Jackson Road). The cost for the program is $5 total for all four Monday classes.

Dallas minister to speak at Aglow meeting

Melba Burke, along with her husband, Brad, have taught a popular monthly class on prophesy. The class is now in its 14th year.

Carrollton woman faces deportation after applying for job

The case of a Carrollton woman who faces deportation has raised questions among activists, lawyers and her family, who question the collaboration between a private hospital and the city's police to arrest her.
According to a Denton County affidavit, 40-year-old María Martínez used a fake Social Security card to apply for a job in mid-July at a Luby's restaurant inside Trinity Medical Center at 4343 Josey Lane.
The document says that Ms. Martínez "had a 10:30 a.m. appointment" on July 23 with the hospital's human resources department, where she was arrested by Carrollton police.

Tragedy struck multiple families over the Independence Day weekend as seven people drowned at area lakes.

Juanita Lagunas identified two of the men as her boyfriend, Ismael Rangel, 31, of Houston, and his nephew, 18-year-old Saul Rangel of Lewisville. She said that after she and the men wanted to see who could swim farthest, they realized the water was too deep and began to return to land.
